TABANAN BALI
PH: 62 361 810 086

DIRECTOR: MR GUSTI KETUT SUARDANA

To the north-west of Ubud, en route to Tanna Lot temple you will find Salam orphanage. The orphanage is home to 28 boys and 17 girls aged from 6 18 years of age. The children are provided food, shelter, education and love. They are taught to be self reliant and to help others. The facility accepts children from all religions and respects the children’s beliefs. The children now study music, dance and painting.  School takes place outside the centre.

The region is very poor and the orphanage would like to be able to accept more children but are limited by funds and space.   The children enjoy table tennis, boxing, music and limited access to television, which is a new addition.  They especially like top 40 music and a CD or tape of the latest chart hits will be very well received! The children have 2 ‘ghetto blasters’ donated by Carry For Kids and Radio Rentals in Adelaide.  It comes as no surprise that Westlife is their favourite group! It is all the orphanage can do to provide the children shelter, food and education. The children were very happy and spirited. Thrilled to see visitors from overseas taking time out to visit. A visit to Salam orphanage will make you remind you of the things that are really important in life and how a little love and understanding can go such a long way.

The orphanage is very happy to receive visitors at anytime however an appointment is preferred. Please contact Yayuk Kanti at least 4 weeks prior to your departure date from Australia if you would like to arrange a suitable date and time. Yayuk will need your flight details, address and contact in Australia. For transport please contact Yasa at Destination Asia.

The orphanage has no sponsorship program.

On September the 20th 2004 Dominggus Lewu (19 years old) and Pak Wayan (39 years old) were involved in a fatal motorcycle accident. Sadly neither survived.

Dominggus was in his first year at Sarawasti Senior High School Tabanan. He moved to the orphanage from West Sumba in 1998. Dominggus was a champion boxer and was due to compete again in October 2004. During recent years he took out the following titles.

1. Bali Favorite amateur boxer
2. Champion II in Bali Sports competition
3. Bali best boxing champion in Bali Boxing Competition held in Karangasem
4. Bali best boxing champion in Bali Boxing Competition held in Bangli 5. Champion II in National Boxing Comptetion held in Makasar, Sulawesi

He leaves behind his parents and 5 brothers and sisters who reside in West Sumba.

Pak Wayan was born in Tabanan in 1965. He has worked at the orphanage since January of 2002. He was very dedicated to his work and responsibilities in implementing the regulations of the orphanage. Especially skilled in overseeing the children‚s education and parenting. Before joining the orphanage he was a teacher at public school, and joined Salam after finishing his religion study. He leaves behind his wife Sinu Prihati and his two children, Gusde (6 years old) and Made (1 month old)

All at Carry For Kids in Australia and Indonesia are deeply saddened by this great loss and we extend our deepest sympathy to the families and all at Salam orphanage.
