Formally operated by the Cambodian Government the orphanage was placed into the hands of the Australia Cambodia Foundation Inc. in late 2004. Gerald Trevor, Chairman of the ACF is now in charge of the facility. The orphans were living in appalling conditions receiving no medical treatment and little care. Staff were underpaid and untrained. The babies suspended in nets from the ceiling of an open verandah also home to around 40 boys. The orphanage flooded due to poor drainage and open sewers. One young orphan, a boy called Thy, told us he went blind in one eye at the age of six. When he complained to the housemother of a sore in his eye she was not interested. Thy went blind because nobody cared. The children have suffered many years of poverty and neglect.

Many of the existing buildings will be knocked down to make way for a new dormitory block and a much needed playground and area for the children to relax. Drainage and security problems will be addressed. Computer, sewing and classical Khmer music and dance classes have been established. The children now receive three healthy meals a day, education and quality medical care. Most importantly the children receive love. Geraldine Cox AM, President of Sunrise, said, "When the kids bring home their report cards from school, for the first time in their lives somebody cares"

In time Australia's Jimmy Pham will replicate his now famous K.O.T.O. vocational training school and restaurant for disadvantaged children (located in Hanoi Vietnam) within the grounds of the Siem Reap orphanage. The training will be open to all underprivileged children including the local street children of Siem Reap. The project will take a holistic approach to the care and education of disadvantaged children. A new Sunrise will lift the shadow of suffering and bring hope and joy into the lives of over 100 Cambodian children.

Visitors are very welcome but an appointment is necessary. Visiting hours are between 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily. A completed visitor compliance agreement will be requested on arrival and passport.
